Does your man use your flat irons?

It's been described as the final frontier in male grooming, but more and more men are using flat irons to straighten their hair. The male grooming market has been growing rapidly over the last few years and now it seems that the next big market could be male hair straightening tools.

Previously a woman-only grooming gadget, hair straighteners are now increasingly bought by guys, many of whom have seen how much of a difference it makes to the girlfriends' locks.

Leading manufacturer GHD has just revealed that 25pc of its online sales are to young men.

Bring Your Own Flat Iron

Unless you live in Tampa (which I don't!) then this isn't exactly relevant, but I thought I would share it with you as I thought it was a neat idea. I was just reading about a salon in Tampa that has started a "Bring Your Own Hair Brush" day. Basically you book into the salon, but you actually bring your own styling tools and the stylists will give you guidance on how to use them properly. I know how frustrating it can be when you have your new hair style and then the next time you have to do it yourself at home it all goes wrong...bad hair day, again!! Well take your flat irons down to the Tribeca Color Salon and they will teach you how to use them properly and guide you while you style your own hair.

Watch out in your local salon as this idea might catch on.

Tips for using your flat iron

One of my friends only just started to straighten her hair with a flat iron and she was complaining to me on the phone last night that she seemed to be noticing her hair falling out. I gave her some tips on how to use the straightener properly, but thought it would be good to share those. Here are my top tips:

  • Make sure your using a good quality flat iron with ceramic or ceramic & tourmaline plates as these do less damage to the hair, oh and don't forget to read the insturctions that come with them!
  • Don't use them on wet hair unless you have bought a flat iron that specifically says it is for wet to dry use. If you just have a standard flat iron then you will need to blow dry your hair first.
  • Part your hair into sections, bringing the flat iron down from the top to the bottom. You need to do this fairly quickly otherwise some parts of the hair will get too much heat. Again the better quality flat irons glide over the hair more easily and will not pull at your hair.
  • Buy an after care hair serum to keep your hair healthy.

Ever tried a Brazilian Blowout?

I have to admit that when my friend toldme last week that she was going to have a Brazilian blowout I didn't have any idea what she was talking about. Honestly I thought it sounded very strange! When she explained it was a methond for straightening hair then it made more sense and I was interested as she said it would keep hair straight for a few months and only takes about 90 mins to do it in the salon.

I did a bit of searching online and found on blog written by a hair stylist who through the treatment away after he heard that the treatment contained formaldehyde. At first this didn't sound good at all but when I read more I realised that this wouldn't be a risk to the person having the occasional treatment, but it's a concern to the stylists as they don't know if there is a health risk using the product every day.

My friend has since had it done and absolutely loves it. It does produce good results, her hair is now totally frizz free and looks realy shiny and according to her it is very easy to manage in the morning before work.

Flat Irons – Hints and Tips to help you choose the best pair for you!

Americans spend about 7 billion dollars a year on hair treatments and products trying to make straight hair curly or curly hair straight. Hair straightening is the most popular way of changing the condition of your hair and this can be done using permanent methods such as using chemical components. However one of the best methods is to use sedu hair straighteners. They use tourmaline or ceramic ion technology, which generates negative ions and infra red heat. This makes your hair frizz free but without damaging your hair no matter what type of hair you have. They are easy to use, light, and heat really quickly so can be used straightaway and best of all they do not cost a lot. Despite the high heat that is being applied to your hair, if used in the right way they will not damage your hair.

If you have decided to straighten hair at home using a flat iron then it is important to choose the right pair for you that will fit your needs. That’s why we have got all the information you need to make an informed choice.

  1. First of all make sure that you pay the right price. That means not paying too much for a pair but equally not buying a cheap pair that won’t do the job right. Ideally you should be paying between $100 and $160.

  2. The width of you ceramicflat iron is also important. You need to choose a width that will best fit your hair although most hair straighteners will fit most hair types, even if very curly. The best hair straighteners come with adjustable ceramic plates for your hair’s length.

  3. To ensure that your hair is not damaged, it is vital that you buy straighteners that have ceramic plates, as only these assure no heat damage when used properly.

  4. The temperature needs to be hot! There is no point getting a pair of straighteners that only has low temperature setting. The maximum temperature should be around 150oC and anything less than that will not be very effective and may mean that your style may not hold.

  5. Although ceramic flat irons don’t cause long lasting damage to your hair it is important to still use hair oils and straightening products to try and prevent drying your hair out. Now that straightening hair is so popular there are many hair products available at affordable prices.

  6. The distribution of heat can vary especially in straighteners with metal plates. This could really damage your hair if at one end of the plate the temperature is higher than at another. Sedu and other ceramic hair straighteners have an even distribution of heat.

Hair straighteners are a fantastic and have many advantages however misuse of them will definitely cause damage and you need to make sure that you follow the manufacturers instructions so that you enjoy using your hair straighteners!

Beware of fake GHD stylers

With Christmas fast approaching it is always tempting to try and find a bargain. There are often many fake copies of flat iron brands like GHD, Solia, and Sedu, being sold online. I just noticed that GHD has a function on it's website that lets you check if an online retailer authentic.

GHDhair.com says:

There are many counterfeit sellers trying to rip you off with fake ghd stylers. They look similar to the real thing but they aren't.

Don't be fooled into paying for a poor quality fake ghd styler.

You can check if a website is genuine at GHDhair.com

If you are still unsure which straightener to buy then have a look at the flat iron reviews website.
